PM welcomes Guterres as new UN chief

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says Australia is looking forward to working with the new Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has welcomed Antonio Guterres's appointment as the next secretary-general of the United Nations.

Mr Turnbull said the former Portuguese prime minister had served as the UN's refugee chief with distinction and has decades of leadership experience.

"The government looks forward to working constructively with Mr Guterres on global challenges such as refugees, terrorism, conflict prevention and sustainable development," he said in a statement on Friday.
