Former rugby league great-turned politician Glenn Lazarus has hit back at Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's remarks that AFL is the most exciting football code.

Senator Lazarus said Mr Turnbull didn't know what he was talking about.

"He's only saying this because his beloved Roosters are having a shocking year and he believes that they're done and dusted so he's going to try and put up the smokescreen and make everybody concentrate on the Aussie Rules," Senator Lazarus told ABC TV.
