PM's department briefed him on plebisicite

Malcolm Turnbull's department provided advice on holding a same-sex marriage plebisicite shortly after he became prime minister.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's department gave him advice on holding a same-sex marriage plebiscite shortly after he took the job in September 2015.

But there has been no subsequent advice given, deputy secretary Elizabeth Kelly told a Senate estimates hearing on Monday.

The department sought legal advice before its briefing to Mr Turnbull.
