Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's plane has taken off from Missouri after an unscheduled stopover on the way home from his White House visit to meet with Donald Trump.

The plane landed in St Louis after an RAAF staff member was injured when an item fell from the overhead locker.

The staff member has been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The military representative is not a personal member of the prime minister’s staff.

Albanese had travelled to the US to meet with Donald Trump for a highly anticipated bilateral meeting, which took 10 months to secure.

The two leaders met in the White House on Monday to discuss trade, AUKUS, critical minerals and a potential visit to Australia.

The trip was deemed a success, with the signing of a critical minerals deal and Trump throwing his support behind AUKUS.
