PNG's O'Neill to face no confidence motion

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill will face a no confidence motion in the national parliament on Friday.

Papua New Guinea's prime minister is playing the economic stability card ahead of a no confidence motion parliamentary vote.

Peter O'Neill has seized on the International Monetary Fund's decision this week to trim its forecast for global growth overall as a result of Britain's decision to leave the European Union.

He said stability and confidence were more critical than ever.

The motion will be debated on Friday in PNG's parliament after a week-long adjournment.

Mr O'Neill said there were some green shoots in PNG's economy as it recovered from the impact of lower commodity prices.

"I am confident that when we have the confirmation of strong, competent majority government after tomorrow's vote in the national parliament, we can build on the early signs of economic recovery, and lay the foundations for the investment spending in the gas, mining, agriculture and other sectors we need as a nation," he said.

One impediment to the economic recovery was political instability, community disruption and disorder, Mr O'Neill warned.

The prime minister has been fighting for his political survival since PNG police opened fire on protesting university students calling for his resignation over corruption allegations in June.
