The urge to "catch 'em all" may have weakened the defences of two men who have been bashed and robbed while playing Pokemon Go on an Adelaide beach.

The men were struck from behind and had their phones stolen in the attack at Largs Bay early on Monday.

They suffered serious head injuries and are being treated in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Police say the attack, carried out by two people who remain at large, is a timely reminder to those who use the app to still pay attention to what's happening around them.

"As noted in the opening screen of this app, police would reiterate that users should remember to be alert at all times and stay aware of their surroundings," SA police said in a statement.

The Adelaide attack comes after a NSW couple were mugged at gunpoint by two people at a Tahmoor skate park in July while using the app.

Distracted Pokemon Go users have also caused some chaos on Australian roads, with a Melbourne teenager crashing his car into a school last month while trying to capture a digital creature.

The augmented reality game, launched in early July, uses Google Maps to overlay reality with Pokemon creatures.
