An armed man has been arrested after allegedly shooting his grandmother and another person before barricading himself into a Los Angeles supermarket where he shot a woman dead, police have confirmed.

"A male suspect... become involved in a family dispute which resulted in him shooting his grandmother and a female at the scene," police Sergeant Barry Montgomery told journalists.

The suspect “fled the location in his grandmother's vehicle, taking that female victim with him" and eventually entered a Trader Joe's supermarket following a police pursuit in which he fired shots at officers, he said.

Mayor Eric Garcetti said one woman was shot in the store and later declared dead at the scene.

"I regret to inform you that there is one fatality that occurred inside, of a woman," Mr Garcetti said, without further identifying the woman.

He added that the suspect was wounded in the arm during the shootout.

The suspect ran into the Silver Lake Trader Joe's store following the police chase around 3.30pm Saturday LA time.

He barricaded himself inside the supermarket taking staff and customers hostage for about three hours.

Officers rescued some of the people trapped inside, while the suspect released some himself.

He later gave himself up after negotiations with police and handcuffed himself before leaving the store.

The LA Police Department confirmed the suspect was arrested and taken into police custody around 6.40pm.

"The situation remains fluid as officers move forward clearing the location," the police department tweeted.

United States President Donald Trump had earlier tweeted that he was watching the situation “very closely".

Don Kohles was standing outside the store when the suspect's car crashed into a pole.

"The bullets were flying everywhere - through the front of the store and across the parking lot," he told the Los Angeles Times.

Eye witness Devin Field tweeted that he was walking into the store when the incident unfolded.

"I was walking in when a car crashed running from the police crashed into street lamp in front of the entrance," said Mr Field, whose Twitter account identifies him as a writer for the Jimmy Kimmel Live TV show.

"Gunman got out and started shooting at the cops. I hid behind a retaining wall with three cops until they had me crawl out.

"Gunman walked in shooting. He went into the back and took hostages. Employees snuck out through back emergency exits. Employee says blood was all over the floor, unclear from where."

Footage from local TV stations NBC Los Angeles and CBS Los Angeles showed people leaving a store window using a rope ladder and police carrying children to safety through a parking lot.

The Silver Lake area of Los Angeles is east of Hollywood and is home to numerous creatives and actors in the entertainment industry.
