Police close in on teen murder cold case

Victoria police have uncovered new clues in the 30-year-old murder of a Victorian teen.

New information has shed light on the 30-year-old murder case of Shepparton teen Michelle Buckingham.

Sixteen-year-old Michelle was last seen walking towards her home from the Victoria hotel on the evening of October 21, 1983.

Her body was discovered in long grass in Kialla East with stab wounds to her chest and back about two weeks later.

Detectives have since uncovered new information.

Homicide Squad Detective Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles said he believes Michelle was picked up in a green early 1970s Holden sedan the night she went missing.

"We think Michelle may have got into the car with someone she knew," Det Snr Serg Iddles said.

He said police believe there was more than one man in the car at the time.

They are calling on anybody who remembers seeing the vehicle in or around the Shepparton area in October 1983 to contact them.

"Someone knows what happened to Michelle that night and we need them to come forward," Det Snr Serg Iddles said.

Michelle was last seen wearing a Mickey Mouse jumper and blue denim jeans.
