Police hunt for man over bizarre call

Police are looking for a man who sparked an emergency situation in Brisbane's north after claiming he had killed his parents.

Queensland police are looking for a man who sparked an emergency situation in Brisbane's north but won't confirm reports the threatening phone call they received was a hoax.

Police say they received a call at 2.30am on Wednesday from a man who claimed he had killed his parents and was threatening to harm himself and others.

An emergency situation was declared around the QUT university campus at Kelvin Grove and police spent hours door-knocking about 60 residents in a unit complex.

"We treat all threats against safety of people very seriously, we treated this very seriously," a police spokesman told reporters at the scene.

"At this stage we are satisfied every person in that building is quite safe."

The emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act was revoked at 4.45am.

Police are still looking for the man who made the phone call.

They are unwilling to label the situation a hoax while investigations were still underway.

A police spokesperson said if it was a hoax, the offender would face serious criminal charges.
