A gunman is on the run after shooting a 15-year-old boy as he lay in bed at his southwest Sydney home, with the teen later dying in hospital.

The man kicked in the door of the family's Glenfield home at 6am on Friday, then shot the boy in the head, in what is suspected to be a revenge attack.

The 15-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, died at The Children's Hospital in Westmead five hours later.

The shooting is reportedly connected to another homicide, however Detective Chief Inspector Mark Brett would not comment on "any of those speculations".

Det Chief Insp Brett said the victim's mother, stepfather and two young siblings, aged one and seven, were not injured in the attack, but his mother was "extremely distressed".

He said the boy was known to police.

Police are now hunting the man responsible for the killing, who is described as being 18 to 20 years old with a thin build.

They said he was last seen wearing grey tracksuit pants, a navy blue hooded jacket and white joggers and may still be armed.

"We need to speak to a number of witnesses, we don't know who the offender is," Detective Chief Inspector Brett said.

"It's going to be a long, drawn out process."

Friends of the teenager paid tribute on social media, with one post on Facebook saying "RIP BROTHER, Still can't believe your (sic) gone.. but you will all ways be missed and loved my brother".

"I didn't see this coming at all and wish it never did you will forever and allways (sic) be my bubby," another post said.
