New York police are searching for a suspect after a six-year-old boy was killed and a seven-year-old girl was critically wounded in a stabbing in New York's Brooklyn borough.
The boy, Prince Joshua Avitto, and his friend Mikayla Capers were on their way to get ice-cream on Sunday night when a man stabbed them in the elevator of a Brooklyn housing project.
Avitto died shortly after, while Capers was hospitalised in critical condition, reportedly with a pierced lung.
Police were sweeping the streets of Brooklyn on Monday in search of the suspect with the help of helicopters and K-9 units. However, the lack of video surveillance in the housing project made the investigation difficult.
"We cannot have a city where two ... children who went to get an ice-cream are stabbed, one killed and the other fighting for her life," New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton said on Monday, The New York Times reported.
"That is not the city of New York that we want to police. That is not the city of New York that we are responsible for."
