The death of a 69-year-old woman is being treated as suspicious after her body was discovered in Sydney's east.

Police were called to Kimberley McRae's unit on Mount Street in Coogee about 10am on Tuesday, where they found the woman's body.

Her cause of death remains unclear.

Police said she worked in the sex industry and had also been known as Isabella, Samantha and Sabrina.

Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty on Friday said Ms McRae was last seen on 7 January and her phone was in use the following day.

"Her exact movements from the last time she was seen last Tuesday and when her body was found seven days later (are) unclear," Det Supt Doherty said in a statement.

"Kim had a distinct personal style with recognisable features and a wide circle of associates."

He said she was known to run along the foreshore and the Coogee stairs in the evening and police had formed a task force has been created to investigate Ms McRae's death.

"Investigators are aware Kim worked in the sex industry and may be known to some of her associates as Isabella, Samantha and Sabrina," he said.

"Of course, we'd be keen to speak to anyone who has information or knowledge of Kim's social activities."

Anyone with further information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
