Police sent to stop violence in NT town

A man's body has been found after riots broke out in a remote Northern Territory community that is mourning the deaths of four local young people.

Extra police have been sent to the troubled Northern Territory community of Ali Curung after a 25-year-old man was killed in violent fighting.

The Indigenous community has been in mourning over the deaths of four local young people who became stranded after their car broke down last week.

Police were called to Ali Curung, south of Tennant Creek, on Monday morning after reports of at least dozens of people fighting with weapons and looting.

Police are investigating the 25-year-old man's death, with an autopsy to be conducted, Southern Desert Division Superintendent Jody Nobbs told reporters.

At least one person was also injured.

The town is in lockdown following significant damage to property, including cars being set on fire.

Extra police from Alice Springs, Darwin and Tennant Creek have been sent to the community to keep the peace and keep services operating.

Last week a 19-year-old-man, his 19-year-old female partner, their three-year-old son and a 12-year-old child were found dead, most likely from exposure, after their car broke down in the region.

A "sorry camp" had been set up in Ali Curung for mourning family members.

Police said the violence may be related to the deaths.

"It is certainly well known there was a tragic event that occurred last Friday involving broad community linkages to Ali Curung ... that tragic event from last week may have some involvement in today's matter," Supt Nobbs said on Monday.
