California Highway Patrol officers shot and wounded a man walking on a downtown Los Angeles highway after he charged at them with a weapon early Tuesday, authorities said.
All northbound lanes of Interstate 110 and the connectors to Interstate 10 were closed following the shooting, backing up commuter traffic for kilometres.
Highway patrol officers responded to several reports of a pedestrian in lanes, Los Angeles police Detective Meghan Aguilar told reporters. She said the man was unco-operative and did not comply with officers' orders.
Officers opened fire when the man charged at them with a weapon, Aguilar said. She did not say what kind of weapon it was.
The man was struck by gunfire and hospitalised in an unknown condition. He was not immediately identified.
