Part of the Indian community in Melbourne believes the police response to reports of violence against its members has been slow, as the state comes to terms with a growing number of attacks on Indian students.

One man, who chose to remain anonymous due to safety concerns, says he was bashed close to a train station on Christmas Eve. He says the police did not show up after a call for assistance was made.

Gautam Gupta, leader of an Indian student group, says the advice given to foreign students by police shows 'a lack of common sense.'

The small number of officers of Indian heritage in the force is also a cause for concern for many in the Indian community.
