Almost $25 million will be spent on boosting security at key NSW police stations in response to the growing threat of a terror attack, says the state government.

The NSW police force will also be boosted with the purchase of a new aircraft, to be named PolAir 8, adding to police arsenal during counter terrorism operations, it was announced on Friday.

"The reality is, for a police officer in Australia, we are in significant risk... that's the way we are operating and that's why this funding is so greatly appreciated," NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione told reporters at the police aviation support branch in Bankstown.
