Australian Federal Police (AFP) have used tear gas to quell a protest among detainees held on Christmas Island.

One detainee suffered a broken leg in the incident, which occurred overnight, Federal Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said on Monday.

Mr Bowen said tear gas was used after the protest broke out at the detention centre early on Monday morning (AEDT).

It followed two separate escapes involving dozens of detainees on Friday and Saturday.

All have now been returned to the centre.

"Damage was done to facilities including fencing, some accommodation and door locks.

"At 3.37am this morning the Australian Federal Police determined that it was necessary to use tear gas to quell this protest."

No police or detention centre staff were injured during the incident.
