Policy was surprise to climate authority

The government didn't seek advice or consult with the Climate Change Authority before it announced its climate policy, a Senate estimates committee has heard.

The body set up to provide the Morrison government with climate change policy advice was not consulted for its climate package.

The policy includes $2 billion over 15 years for the Climate Solutions Fund, which aims to reduce Australia's emissions between 26 to 28 per cent by 2030 over 2005 levels.

Climate Change Authority chair Wendy Craik says she didn't hear about the government policy before it was announced in the media.

"We weren't invited to have an input or put advice together," Dr Craik told a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra on Monday.

The body hasn't done any analysis on the policy or Labor's approach, she added.
