Politicians defend PM on beer and bubs

Politicians have lined up to defend Malcolm Turnbull for posting a Facebook photo of himself enjoying a beer while holding his grandchild on the weekend.

Turnbull throws support behind 'yes' campaign

Beer and bubs are an irresponsible mix Facebook users have told Malcolm Turnbull.

The prime minister sparked an online backlash after posting a picture of himself holding his granddaughter with a beer in hand at an AFL final on the weekend.

"I think it's the craziness of social media when you see things like that," Mr Turnbull told Eddie McGuire on Triple M radio on Monday.

"As long as you're comfortable in your own skin and you're just being yourself, being natural, that's all you can do."

Other federal MPs queued up to defend the prime minister and label the outcry as a beat up.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten tweeted: "I've found something Malcolm & I can agree on. This is rubbish. Let him be a grandpa."

Liberal senator James Paterson said he normally didn't comment on such matters.

"But now that it's out there I think it's important that we say Australia is not a nanny state," he told reporters in Canberra.

"It's ok to have your granddaughter in one hand and a beer in the other."

Nationals senator Matt Canavan tweeted his own bub and beer photo, saying: "I support the PM! #multitasking."
