Politicians respond to chaos in parliament

Twitter erupts as parliament's final day of sitting results in no energy legislation, national security laws or improved health checks for asylum seekers.

WHAT THEY SAID ON FINAL CHAOTIC DAY OF PARLIAMENT FOR 2018

"Over two hours of government filibustering to stop a bill for life saving medical transfers of refugees on Manus and Nauru. The last day of parliament is a joke of the government's own chaotic and cruel making." - Labor senator Lisa Singh.

"I have never seen anything like this. The Senate is in blazing freefall." - Greens senator Jordon Steele-John.

"Don't go home Scott Morrison. Stay at work and pass these national security laws." - Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.

"Labor has chosen to allow terrorists and paedophiles to continue their evil work in order to engage in point scoring." Defence Minister Christopher Pyne.

"It's desperation time here in the Senate." - Labor senator Kristina Kenneally.

"Right now, the government is shutting down the House of Representatives before it debates legislation it insists is essential for national security. Why? Because it doesn't want to transfer around 10 sick kids from Nauru to Australia for medical treatment. Think about that." - Labor senator Murray Watt.

"Why can't I get popcorn?" - Labor senator Catryna Bilyk.

"This is everything that's wrong with politics." - Greens leader Senator Richard Di Natale.

"Extraordinary. Shameful. Appalling." - Labor MP Andrew Giles.
