Polkinghorne joins 'Dons in AFL

Former Brisbane utility James Polkinhorne and ex-Geelong player Mathew Stokes are Essendon's latest top-up confirmations in the AFL.

Essendon have signed former Brisbane utility James Polkinghorne and confirmed two-time Geelong player Mathew Stokes is also on their AFL list.

The Bombers have now signed six of their 10 top-up players, which includes Stokes' old Geelong teammate James Kelly, Ryan Crowley (Fremantle), Jonathan Simpkin (Hawthorn) and Matt Dea (Richmond).

Polkinghorne joined Essendon's VFL team in 2015, winning their best-and-fairest award, after seven seasons with the Lions.

He played 97 games for Brisbane.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling meant Essendon lost 12 players for the season and the AFL allowed the Bombers the 10 top-ups.
