Singing, dancing and Katy Perry: The election campaign takes a turn for the weird as politicians across Australia vie for your vote on September 7.

To the delight and general confusion of television watchers last night, former Labor MP Craig Emerson has reprised his role as an all-singing, all-dancing ex-politician.

The one-time Trade Minister appeared on ABC's Hamster Decides last night to... well, you really have to see it.

Emerson became a viral hit after putting his own spin on a Skyhooks song last year. Could a career on the RSL circuit be next?

Tony Abbott has been busy on the campaign trail this morning, heading south to Tasmania where it's expected he'll announce more plans to boose the state's economy.

He's also been chatting to Katy Perry. Yes, the US pop star. This could be a one-up on Kevin Rudd's shaving-selfie Instagrams in appealing to the youth vote.

Although it appears they didn't see eye-to-eye on every topic:

If it's the light-hearted approach Tony is going for today, he'll no doubt appreciate this warm welcome from a local cafe in Hobart:

Over to the seat of Lindsay, west of Sydney, where candidates went head-to-head in a community forum last night.

The seat is currently held by Labor MP David Bradbury by a small margin, and is typically a swinging seat, loyal to no particular party.
