Pollie Waffle: The lighter side of the election trail

Tony Abbott and Kevin Rudd went head-to-head last night at the People’s Forum held in Brisbane, answering questions from 100 undecided voters.

By most accounts it was a livelier affair than the first leaders' debate, and covered ground now fairly well-trodden in this election campaign without bringing out any startling revelations.

Veteran press gallery journalist Michelle Grattan put Labor leader Kevin Rudd slightly ahead on the strength of his performance.

At one point, Tony Abbott motioned to his opponent and asked the crowd: "Does this guy ever shut up?"

It must have felt like a free kick to Finance Minister Penny Wong, who wasted no time pointing out the comment showed his "aggro" side.

Meanwhile Kevin Rudd was also accused of unsporting behaviour during last night's forum, this time by the make-up artist who prepped both candidates. Lily Fontana posted the following comment on her Facebook page:

"Just finished doing Kevin Rudd and Tony Abbott's makeup for the People's Forum at the Broncos Leagues Club. One of them was absolutely lovely, engaged in genuine conversation with me, acknowledge that I had a job to do and was very appreciative. The other did the exact opposite! Oh boy, I have ever had anyone treat me so badly whilst trying to do my job. Political opinions aside...from one human being to another...Mr Abbott, you win hands down."

Update:  The Prime Minister has told News Limited journalists the incident was a "misunderstanding" that occurred while he was "in the zone", preparing for the debate. Ms Fontana has since retracted her comments, deleting them from Facebook and saying she regrets making them.

Both candidates are back on the campaign trail this morning, with Kevin Rudd in Geelong. He's been catching up with infamous clown fish Nemo, reports NITV political correspondent Brooke Boney.
Tony Abbott is still in Queensland today, and was captured earlier in this awkward exchange with a nun:
