Pollies react to Dastyari's resignation

Labor senator Sam Dastyari has quit federal parliament but insists he's a patriotic Australian despite the controversy surrounding his links to China.

WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT SAM DASTYARI QUITTING PARLIAMENT:

"I've decided that the best service I can render to the federal parliamentary Labor Party is to not return to the Senate in 2018." - Outgoing Labor senator Sam Dastyari

"Sam Dastyari is a good, decent and loyal Australian, and an effective parliamentarian, but his judgment has let him down and now he has paid the heaviest price." - Opposition leader Bill Shorten

"Dastyari has quite plainly been acting in the interests of another government or another power." - Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull

"Sam Dastyari is a double agent." - Immigration Minister Peter Dutton

"The only reason that Sam Dastyari announced his resignation today is because he was causing political damage to the Labor party on the eve of an important by-election," cabinet minister Mathias Cormann

"Sam did the wrong thing, now the right thing. Amidst all the criticism today let's not forget the contribution he's made to Australia by shining a light on multinational tax avoidance, banking scandals and unfairness and injustice in our society which should trouble us all" - Labor frontbencher Jim Chalmers

"Sam has made the right decision in stepping down. Sam brought to the Senate tenacity, determination and campaigning skills that shone a light on issues that the government would rather have swept under the carpet." - Labor frontbencher Penny Wong

"Bill Shorten should have sacked him weeks ago." - Foreign Minister Julie Bishop

"He took the only course of action open to him, it was right that he resigned. (But) this is not about one person, this is about a whole system that is broken." - Greens leader Richard Di Natale

"Goodbye Sam, Sam goodbye, goodbye, goodbye. Shame you had to go - bye-bye Sammy boy." - former federal MP Clive Palmer

"Best wishes to Sam in the next phase of his career. He's been a strong voice on multinational tax & for a bank royal commission" - ALP assistant treasury spokesman Andrew Leigh

"Fantastic to see @samdastyari go. Day of celebration. We should always remember how badly anti-white racist this grub was. - Former federal Labor leader Mark Latham
