Polls offer mixed bag of party favours

An analysis of Newspolls put the coalition in front but a Fairfax/Ipsos poll puts Labor in the driving seat three weeks out from five crucial by-elections.

The looming by-elections may well provide a snapshot of the way voters will go in the federal election due within a year, according to analyses of two different polls.

The coalition looks to be in a stronger position heading into the July 28 super by-elections, according to a state-by-state analysis by The Australian of Newspolls carried out between April and June.

The biggest boost for the Liberals' results was the state election win in South Australia that ended 16 years of Labor governments.

Labor may still lead the coalition but its ahead by just four percentage points on 52 per cent to 48 on a two-party preferred basis.

However, the Fairfax/Ipsos poll shows the opposite picture.

According to Fairfax Media, the coalition is losing voters to Labor in nearly all the states, with Labor on 53 per cent to 47 on a two-party basis.

One thing both polls agree on is that Malcolm Turnbull continues to lead Bill Shorten as preferred prime minister.
