The Porsche driver who fled the scene of a horror highway truck crash that killed four Victoria Police officers has been identified as a 41-year-old mortgage broker.
Richard Pusey is currently in police custody after he was arrested on Thursday.
Victoria Police would not confirm his identity but said in a statement he was known to police and was on bail at the time of the incident.
They said he was facing charges of unlawful assault and theft and was also due to front Melbourne Magistrates Court in June on a criminal damage charge.
Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said on Thursday it appeared Pusey had taken photos of the scene before fleeing and later posting them to Facebook. The photos have since been removed.
"As a chief commissioner, to have four officers killed last night - someone who has clearly been driving erratically on the freeway with an extensive criminal history, it disgusts me," Mr Ashton said.
"And then to leave the scene is a very, very low act in my view."
Pusey had allegedly failed a roadside drug test after he was pulled over by police for speeding.
He fled the scene on foot after a refrigerator truck ploughed into the officers.
The four police officers who died in the crash were identified on Thursday afternoon as Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Constable Glen Humphris, Senior Constable Kevin King, and Constable Josh Prestney.
Both Constable Prestney and Constable Humphris were new to the force and were undergoing placements as part of their probationary training.
The truck driver, Melbourne man Mohinder Singh Bajwa, had a "medical episode" after the crash and is in hospital under police guard, Mr Ashton said.
Mr Bajwa's home in Cranbourne was searched on Wednesday night.
"What was found there is still the subject of an ongoing investigation," Mr Ashton said.
The deaths of the four officers represents the biggest loss of life in a single incident in Victoria Police history.
