Port don't need big AFL scalp: Trengove

Port Adelaide doesn't need a big scalp to justify their AFL finals credentials, utility Jackson Trengove says.

Port Adelaide stalwart Jackson Trengove doesn't subscribe to the theory that his side needs a big scalp to be taken seriously as AFL contenders.

The Power travel to play Geelong on Thursday night having beaten up on sides lower on the ladder but falling just short of sides above.

"You hear the talk of the big scalp but that is not what we're after - we're about performing every week whether it be at home or away or in Shanghai," Trengove told AAP on Monday.

"That is what we're consistently trying to get right.

"We have been able to perform most games and it has probably only been a couple of lapses against some good teams that we haven't quite capitalised on."

Port sit in sixth spot on a ladder skewed by the fact the South Australian club just had a bye after their China game while most other teams played.

The Power's three losses have come against ladder-leaders Adelaide, second-placed Greater Western Sydney and fourth-placed West Coast.

And Trengove said Geelong, in third spot, would present another testing assignment for his club.

"Geelong have obviously been such a good team for 10 years," he said.

"Friday night, we saw the heat they brought to the Western Bulldogs so it's obviously going to be on early."

But Trengove said Port's new-found consistency should hold them in good stead against the Cats.

"In previous years we have dropped off for quarters or halves and seen glimpses of good footy," he said.

"But we are starting to get a bit of consistency with the way we're playing and that is probably the most pleasing thing.

"We talk about in-form teams or teams above us but ... the form we're in, we think it's going to be able to match some of the higher up teams. But only time will tell."
