Porter to become Leader of the House

Christian Porter will become leader of the government in the House of Representatives in when federal parliament resumes.

Attorney-General Christian Porter will become Leader of the House when federal parliament reconvenes.

Mr Porter said Prime Minister Scott Morrison made the decision prior to the federal election, after Christopher Pyne announced his retirement.

"That is an important and vital role to the functioning of parliament," he told reporters in Perth on Monday.

"I'd like to see that role executed in a way that is as collegiate as possible and makes for a parliament that is cooperative and works as well as it can do in the interests of the Australian people."

Mr Porter will stay on as attorney-general.
