A serial bank robber dubbed the "Postcard Bandit" has appeared briefly in a Perth court over a prison escape 27 years ago.

Brenden James Abbott, 53, appeared in Perth Magistrates Court via video link from Casuarina prison on Thursday, charged with escaping legal custody over his 1989 breakout from Fremantle prison.

It was his second appearance in a Perth court following his extradition from Queensland last month and he had the matter adjourned until August 4 for legal advice.

Abbott was granted parole in Brisbane in April, having served 18 years of a 25-year sentence for a string of robberies and another brazen escape from a Queensland prison in 1997, but WA authorities ensured he was swiftly arrested.

He had fought extradition, with his lawyers arguing it was an abuse of process, but a Brisbane judge rejected the bid.

WA Attorney-General Michael Mischin has showed no sympathy for Abbott, describing him as a "fugitive of justice" who would serve the remainder of his 16-year prison sentence unless he decided otherwise.
