Notorious Australian bank robber Brenden Abbott has been rearrested and taken to the Brisbane Watch House to face an extradition motion after his release from jail earlier this morning.

The 53-year-old, once known as the Postcard Bandit, has served 18 years in a Queensland prison but is still wanted by West Australian authorities.

He escaped from prison in Fremantle in 1989 and still has years of his sentence to serve in WA for various offences, including daring escapes from custody.

The two-time prison escapee was granted parole last month and transferred to the Brisbane Correctional Centre in Wacol on Monday pending his imminent release.

Abbott's lawyers will oppose the WA extradition order.

"The decision to seek his extradition to Western Australia is somewhat perplexing and we would say unfair, given the history of the matter," lawyer Brendan Nyst said.

Mr Nyst said it would not serve the interests of justice for his client to be locked up again given the Queensland Parole Board determined he was not a risk to the community.

Abbott had previously applied to be transferred to WA but that state's attorney-general had denied permission, he added.

Abbott, who served more than half his 25-year jail sentence, was dubbed the "Postcard Bandit" amid reports he taunted police by sending them postcards while he was on the run. His lawyer has said those photos were never sent to police.
