Newcastle assistant coach Mick Potter has been appointed Fiji's new head coach.

The former Wests Tigers, Bradford, St Helens and Catalans Dragons coach will be in charge for the Bati's Test match against Papua New Guinea in Sydney on May 7.

Fiji National Rugby League chief executive Timoci Naleba said at the announcement that Potter signed a short-term contract and that further discussions would take place at the end of the year regarding the 2017 World Cup.
