As National Guard units worked to rescue stranded drivers, the National Weather Service advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, in a posting on its Facebook page.

"If...you thought you could still get out and travel, well you haven't seen anything yet!"

Several Oklahoma highways were closed, while hundreds of flights were cancelled or delayed in Colorado following more than 20cm of snow on Monday morning.

Kansas City, Missouri, is quickly approaching its February snowfall record, in place for over 50 years.

Blizzard conditions are expected to continue over the next few days as the storm moves further north.
