Premier slams lethal Qld virus outbreak

The Queensland premier says it is not acceptable a respiratory virus has been detected at an aged care hospital near Cairns where four elderly people died.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says it's unacceptable four elderly people have died after a respiratory virus outbreak at an aged care hospital near Cairns.

Tests have confirmed the presence of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) at Herberton Hospital where another eight residents and 15 staff are ill.

"We need to get to the bottom of this. Queensland Health is currently undertaking an investigation and I plan to also raise this issue with the health minister," Ms Palaszczuk said on Sunday.

"It's not acceptable to have that high rate of incidents happening at the hospital."
