Premier wants SA rate cap rules passed

South Australian Premier Steven Marshall wants state parliament to deal next week with his government's rate-cap legislation.

South Australian Premier Steven Marshall says he's determined to have legislation to limit increases in council rates pass state parliament next week, warning MPs to expect some long sitting hours.

The legislation will limit the size of rate rises each year, with the cap to be determined by an independent regulator.

"We made it clear in the lead-up to the election that what we wanted to see was lower costs for households and businesses in this state," the premier told reporters on Monday.

"The people in this state do not want ever-increasing council rates.

"The Liberal government's legislation will protect ratepayers against these unexpected increases."

Mr Marshall said the Greens had already indicated they would not support the government's bill but called on Labor to back the measures.

"It's time for (Opposition Leader) Peter Malinauskas and the Labor party to make up their position.

"Are they on the side of the people of South Australia or are they going to be sitting on the fence."

Last week, SA-Best upper house MP Frank Pangallo urged the government to have the legislation reviewed by the state's proposed new productivity commission.

"If the government is serious about introducing rate-capping legislation and believes it is in the best interest of the state and ratepayers it should have no fears in having the productivity commission investigate," he said.
