AFP announced on Wednesday the deal had been signed in Paris on Tuesday with the Korean Central News Agency.

"The opening of an Agence France-Presse bureau in Pyongyang will further strengthen the Agency’s international network," AFP Chairman Emmanuel Hoog said.

"AFP’s role is to be present everywhere in the world in order to fulfil its news mission as completely as possible, in particular through images."

The bureau will produce text, photo and video news and will be operation in the first half of 2016.

AFP already has 200 bureaux in 150 countries and is the second major global news agency to open a Pyongyang bureau.

Associated Press already has a bureau in the notoriously secretive country, as do Japan’s Kyodo and China’s Xinhua agencies.
