Presumption against bail for terrorists

Draft laws introduced to federal parliament propose a presumption against bail and parole for terrorists and terrorism sympathisers, including those under 18.

Terrorists and terrorism sympathisers will find it harder to get bail under draft laws introduced to federal parliament.

As he introduced the bill to the lower house on Wednesday, Attorney-General Christian Porter reflected on the "appalling" terrorist attack in Melbourne's Brighton, where the offender was on parole when he lured police into a deadly shootout by taking an escort worker hostage.

The presumption against bail and parole will also apply to terrorism offenders under the age of 18, Mr Porter added.
