Australia's Toby Price has finished third in the eight stage of the Dakar Rally, to move up to fourth overall in the motorbike race.

The New South Welshman, who won the race in 2016, is now seven minutes and 35 seconds behind overall leader Adrien van Beveren who claimed the stage on Sunday.

Van Beveren reclaimed the overall lead despite finishing seventh and has a 22-second lead over Argentinian Kevin Benavides.

The 498-km stage was won by Frenchman Antoine Meo, with American Ricky Brabec a minute and eight seconds behind.

Bad weather conditions made organisers cancel Monday's ninth stage of the race between Tupiza and the city of Salta in Argentina.

"There is a risk of floods and storms," said race director Marc Coma.

Southern Bolivia has been hit by heavy rain over the last few days and Dakar Rally's camp in Tupiza was flooded as well.

The rally is expected to resume Tuesday with the 10th stage between Salta and Belen in Argentina.

Meanwhile, defending champion Stephane Peterhansel recovered from his crash the day to win stage eight in the motorcar race.

The Frenchman is now third overall, one hour 13 minutes behind Spaniard Carlos Sainz - fifth in the stage - and Nasser Al-Attiyah who is in second.

Peterhansel crashed on Saturday 129 kilometres into the stage with damage to his left rear wheel, suspension and radiator.
