The prime minister is keeping open the option of a double dissolution election.

Malcolm Turnbull says he'd prefer the government went full term, which would put the election between August and October, however he won't rule out using a double dissolution earlier to reinstate the construction watchdog, if the Senate blocks legislation for a second time.

"It isn't a threat, it isn't politics, it is simply using a means to resolve a deadlock in a manner that's been set out in the constitution," he told ABC television on Sunday.
