Prince Charles will run Commonwealth: PM

Malcolm Turnbull says Australia will back whoever is king or queen of the United Kingdom to be the head of the Commonwealth.

Australia will endorse Prince Charles to succeed Queen Elizabeth as head of the Commonwealth once he takes the throne, Malcolm Turnbull says.

All 53 leaders of Commonwealth countries are in London for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, where the future head of the Commonwealth will be considered.

"The head of the Commonwealth is Her Majesty the Queen, and the next head of the Commonwealth should be her successor, who will be Prince Charles," the prime minister told reporters in London on Wednesday local time.

"The Australian government's position is that the head of the Commonwealth should continue to be the king or queen of the United Kingdom."
