Like Charlie in the chocolate factory, Prince Charles appeared to be in his element when he visited the WA Seed Technology Centre in Perth to talk to scientists.

The avid gardener and environmentalist spent his visit learning about the latest research coming from WA, asking several questions of each student undertaking post-graduate studies.

This includes areas such as native plant species' drought responses, adaptations in bushfires, conservation of threatened plant species, plant breeding and ecological restoration.

The Prince of Wales tour included a look at laboratories, the Tissue Culture Facility where he viewed specimens and conservation programs, and the plant nursery.

His Royal Highness has long spoken about the irreversible effects of climate change and appeared to be genuinely fascinated to learn about conservation efforts being done in WA.

A major function of the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority is to conserve, display and research WA flora, and promote the understanding of biodiversity.

The WA Seed Technology Centre is located in the Biodiversity Conservation Centre in Kings Park and has been involved in the collection, storage and testing of WA native plant seeds for more than 40 years.

Seeds from more than 3500 different plant species are stored in the seed bank.
