Prime Minister Tony Abbott has hailed the birth of Britain's baby princess as a joyous day for the royal family and a great day for Australians.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has also welcomed the safe arrival of Prince William and Kate's second child, who is already home at Kensington Palace with older brother Prince George.

He expected that like any parents, they'd be excited, tired and probably a little daunted, he told reporters in Melbourne.

Mr Abbott was all smiles in Sydney.

"It's a moment of great joy for any family to welcome a new child," he said.

"It's also a great day for Australian because every member of the royal family has a respect, affection and enthusiasm for Australia."

He noted Prince Harry was serving with the Australian Army right now.

"That's part of a long tradition by the royal family of engagement with our country and I'm sure that you, the new princess, will be an enthusiastic participant in that great tradition."

The new baby is yet to be named, but the bookies in London say the favourites are Alice and Charlotte.
