A bushfire which has s torn up more than 2000 hectares of bushland near Canberra has been downgraded but not before damaging or destroying property in the region.

Rural Fire Service firefighers were called out to the bush and grass fire near Tarago on Tuesday afternoon in response to the blaze, which covered nearly 2500ha by the early evening.

The RFS downgraded the fire to advice threat level about 10.30pm after reducing it from emergency to watch-and-act level earlier in the evening.

However the fire is still not under control and is understood to have damaged sheds, cars and possibly a house, but authorities could not confirm this.

"Property has been damaged but we can't confirm what kind," RFS spokesman Greg Allan told AAP.

"We've had reports of sheds and cars damaged and we've had one report which could be a house."

Firefighters were trying to protect isolated rural properties in the area as the fire moved easterly towards the rail line, Mount Fairy Road and Goulburn Road.

Two air tankers were brought in to battle the blaze while an emergency warning was issued for homes near Mount Fairy Road.

Mr Allan said firefighters hoped to bring the blaze under control by the end of the night, with easing weather conditions expected to aid the operation.

"They're going to try and do as much as they can during the evening," he said. "Hopefully with conditions easing overnight it'll be an easier battle to get to that stage."

Temperatures in the area hit 37C but are expected to drop as low as 15C overnight.
