The British government has urged fans heading to South Africa for the World Cup not to have sex with prostitutes.

Prostitution is illegal in South Africa, and police there say they won't hesitate to arrest foreigners who break the law.

The UK Foreign Office is also warning of soaring levels of HIV infection in the country, where roughly half the prostitutes are said to be HIV positive.

Many prostitutes are also caught up in violent crime and often face attacks.

The Australian Government has also issued warnings to travellers about high levels of serious crime and HIV in South Africa.
