Protesters have delayed a university graduation ceremony in Sydney where former prime minister John Howard received an honorary doctorate.

The ceremony was held up by about 15 minutes by some 50 protesters at the University of Sydney.

Mr Howard received the doctorate for his leadership on gun reform and foreign relations.

The protesters argue that Mr Howard was not a fit recipient of the university's honour because of Australia's involvement in the war in Iraq.
