A crowd has protested outside a Sydney newspaper office against an article they say led to the NSW government cancelling school screenings of a documentary about same-sex families.
The Daily Telegraph reported last week that a planned screening at Burwood Girls High School of Gayby Baby, by former student Maya Newell, had angered some parents.
However, it was later revealed there had been no compliants by parents to the Department of Education about the film.
NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli directed that the film should not be shown during school hours or during classes unless it related to areas being studied under the curriculum.
A spokesperson for the minister insisted it had not been banned.
About 100 people stood outside The Daily Telegraph office on Sunday, chanting "homophobia's got to go".
Protest co-convener Cat Rose said the message being sent to people from same-sex families, or who identify as LGBT, was that "you live in a homophobic world".
Cancelling the screening of the film deprived high school students of learning about diversity in sexual education, Ms Rose told AAP.
"It is really shocking in 2015 for this to be going on and we expect better," she said.
News Corp spokesman Stephen Browning declined to comment.
