Pub patrons have helped nab two would-be armed robbers at a south Sydney hotel.

Two men, one brandishing a gun, entered the Mortdale pub at about 10.30pm on Sunday, threatening the employees and demanding cash before customers fought back, police said.

They held down one of the would-be thieves until police arrived, while the other was later picked up after fleeing the scene.

The two men, in their 20s, have been charged with robbery armed with a dangerous weapon and will face Sutherland Local court on Monday.
