The inquiry into the scandal-plagued City of Perth will hold its first public hearings in August and will include examinations of embattled Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi, councillors and former chief executive Martin Mileham.

It follows several months of private examinations, which will continue through July.

More than 70 witnesses have been questioned so far including ratepayers, city employees, service providers and government representatives.

The inquiry has more than four million documents and more than 110 electronic devices.

It was launched following a failure by Ms Scaffidi to disclose travel and accommodation gifts, reports of infighting between councillors, two CEOs taking stress leave and the suspension of the council in March 2018.

"The work of the inquiry has been more complex and time-consuming than expected," a spokeswoman said in a statement on Thursday.

"Public hearings will provide an opportunity to see the extent of the systemic, organisational and individual failures and dysfunctions at the City of Perth."
