Tens of thousands of public sector workers are due to walk off the job in protest over their long-running pay dispute.

Members from agencies including Medicare, Centrelink, and Defence will take part in the 24 hour strike on Friday September 9 as the enterprise bargaining fight reaches 1000 days.

"(CPSU members) are conscious of the potential temporary disruption caused by this strike, but are urging the general public to support their important work and their fight for a fair deal," the union's national secretary Nadine Flood said on Tuesday.
