Public support for carbon tax drops: poll

A poll has revealed that a third of voters are now more likely to vote Labor if it dumps its carbon tax policy.

The Galaxy poll published in News Ltd newspapers on Saturday reveals that 32 per cent of people would be more likely to vote Labor if the tax was dumped.

That was more than double the 14 per cent who said they would be less likely to vote Labor if it backflipped again on climate change policy.

A little over a half - 53 per cent - said carbon tax policy change would not affect their vote, while only one per cent were uncommitted when asked about the carbon tax.

The carbon tax will go to a vote in Parliament this month and is almost certain to pass with the support of lower house independents and Greens MP Adam Bandt, and the Greens in the Senate.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has vowed to repeal the carbon tax - which will switch to an emissions trading scheme by as early as 2015 - if he wins the next election.

The poll of 500 people was conducted nationally on Tuesday and Wednesday.
