The National Native Title Council is pushing for mining companies to offer apprenticeships to Indigenous school leavers.

Today's proposal was made in a submission to the government's inquiry into Indigenous training and employment.

The National Native Title Council CEO Brian Wyatt said students should be encouraged to start their trade training in the last two years of high school to ensure a guaranteed apprenticeship.

"We hear when many kids leave school we always have an issue with numeracy and literacy," Mr Wyatt said.

He said the only way to combat these issues is to implement a compulsory apprenticeship program for Indigenous school leavers.

"It will be an apprenticeship, it won't be just something to suit their budget or their agenda, it's something that clearly states to employ an Indigenous youth in that sort of category. It will be an apprenticeship, and that’s the way to deal with it," Mr Wyatt said.

The government is yet to deliver its final report on this submission for review.
